Driven By Dirt

Cookie Policy

Last updated: 3 October 2026

This policy explains how Driven By Dirt (drivenbydirt.com) uses cookies and similar technologies, and the choices you make about them.

1. Cookies and your consent

Cookies are small text files placed on your device by a website. We also use "local storage" and "session storage" — similar browser technologies that store data on your device — and, in our mobile app, equivalent device storage.

When you first enter the Site, a cookie banner asks you to accept or decline non-essential cookies. You can choose "Accept all" or "Essential only". Strictly necessary cookies (described below) are always active because the Site cannot function without them. If you choose essential-only, analytics and advertising scripts (Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity, the Meta Pixel and Google AdSense) will not load. You can change your choice at any time using the "Cookie settings" link in the site footer, or by clearing cookies in your browser.

2. Strictly necessary cookies

Always on. These keep you signed in and keep the Site secure.

CookiePurposeDuration
next-auth.session-token / __Secure-next-auth.session-tokenKeeps you signed inUp to 30 days, or until you sign out
next-auth.csrf-tokenProtects against cross-site request forgery on sign-inSession
impersonation_tokenAllows our senior support staff, with full audit logging, to act as a specific user to resolve that user's support issue30 minutes
payload-tokenSigns our content team into the content management systemSession / short-term

3. Functionality cookies

Remember choices that make the Site easier to use. Declining these is safe — you may just see the same intro or onboarding steps again.

CookiePurposeDuration
dbd:welcome-skippedRemembers that you skipped the welcome/setup wizard1 year
dbd:inv-onboardingRemembers that you dismissed track inventory onboarding1 year
rc_bypass_emailGrants access to a closed beta feature to invited testersShort-term

4. Analytics cookies (require your consent)

Set once you accept analytics cookies.

CookiePurposeDuration
_ga, _ga_* (Google Analytics 4)Understand how the Site is used — pages viewed, sessions, events, rough location, device typeUp to 2 years
_clck, _clsk (Microsoft Clarity)Anonymised session recordings and heatmaps to improve page layoutsUp to 1 year / 1 day

5. Advertising cookies (require your consent)

Set once you accept advertising cookies. These are how tracking connects to advertisers, as described in our Privacy Policy.

CookiePurposeDuration
_fbp (Meta Pixel)Measures ad performance and builds audiences for our ads on Facebook and Instagram (retargeting)Up to 3 months
AdSense / Google ad cookies (for example IDE, __gads)Serve, cap the frequency of, and measure the ads Google AdSense displays on the Site; personalise them where you have not opted outTypically up to 13 months

Our own ad system also stores an anonymous, randomly generated session ID (in local storage, not a cookie) so we can cap how often you see the same ad and report campaign aggregates. It contains no personal information. Your cookie consent choice itself is also stored in local storage.

6. Local storage and similar technologies

We use your browser's local and session storage for features such as: keeping your place in the multi-step signup and membership checkout, remembering which garage team you are working in, remembering that you dismissed the app-install prompt, storing your Chromecast session while casting a video, and storing your cookie consent choice. This data stays in your browser unless you clear it, and it is not transmitted to us except where a feature requires it (for example completing your signup).

7. Third-party policies and opt-outs

The analytics and advertising providers have their own policies and opt-outs:

  • Google (Analytics & Ads): policies.google.com/technologies/ads and tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout
  • Microsoft Clarity: microsoft.com/en-us/clarity
  • Meta ads: facebook.com/adpreferences
  • Industry opt-outs (NZ/AU/US): youronlinechoices.com and optout.aboutads.info

You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings — see your browser's help pages. Blocking strictly necessary cookies will stop the Site from working (you won't be able to stay signed in).

8. Changes and contact

We will update this page when our cookies change, with a new "last updated" date. Questions: [email protected].
